Instructor Certification
We encourage our students to develop an enquiring mind and to examine the historical sources first hand. This allows them to form their own understanding and contribute to the ongoing research and debate in the field.
The BFHS is proud of the standard of teaching provided by its member groups.
As part of our martial approach students train as if they were preparing to face an encounter with live blades. An important aspect of training is the use of rebated (blunt) weapons with historically accurate dimensions, construction, weight and balance. We couple this with the best modern protective masks and safety equipment for the benefit of participants. In addition to member groups’ individual training, the BFHS organises seminars every year at which delegates are given the chance to cross-train in a variety of styles. Tuition is given by established BFHS instructors, and we encourage students to participate in tournaments and to practise their skills against students of other disciplines. Many BFHS instructors are regarded by the European martial arts community as leaders in their field, and are often invited to give seminars and classes across Europe, the United States and Australia.
